“The details are not the details. They make the design.”
– Charles Eames
Three times Paul prayed that the pain of the thorn should be removed. But realize that God does have a place for Satan’s attacks in his sovereign plan. The thorn reminds us that evil is still in the world and whether directly or indirectly; every evil; every wound; every suffering that humanity has ever faced can be sourced in the devil.
However; its critical in spiritual warfare to discern whether Satan’s attack is being allowed by God, or it is simply allowed because the believer has not fervently and properly resisted the attack. In other words, is the thorn you are having being ordained by God, or the thorn is permitted to continue because you are not being strong in the Lord in resisting the devil. But Paul was and the attack continued. So we have here, sovereign wisdom, where had made a place for Satan to assault one of his own children. Just like what happened in the book of Job, God does on occasion permit Satan to attack and these attacks always have a purpose in his sovereign plan.
Unfortunately, we may not be able to discern initially what that purpose is, but we can always decide what our response is going to be to the thorn. Then we should seek Gods agenda in the conflict which he is permitting us to encounter. So Gods faithfulness was manifested, not in delivering Paul from adversity but in delivering him through it. Therefore Paul was not delivered from Satan’s attack; he was empowered for Satan’s attack. It was in the thorn that Paul found out that when God is all you have got, he is really all you need. That’s why he said, when I am weak then I am strong. Written By: Mwenge
