In our previous journal, we learn about the beauty of marriage and the satisfaction that a man has displayed after receiving a woman/wife from God. Genesis 3 continues to tell us about this relationship that God has started between man and woman. It starts with an unfortunate accident that happened in the Garden of Eden. After man and woman have now sinned before God, they took a hide in the garden. When God asked Adam about his whereabouts and the nakedness (3:11), Adam’s response is somehow shocking to me.
Adam responded and said “The woman you put here with me, she gave me some fruit from the tree and I ate”. What’s wrong now Adam? Is this not the same woman that you were singing praises about? Is this no longer the bone of your bones? What happened to the flesh of your flesh? Why are you now blaming God for putting this woman with you? Didn’t you indicate loneliness before God? Didn’t you have the whole garden and animals to yourself before Eve was created? Didn’t God give you a task to take care and name all animals? Didn’t you continue to indicate loneliness even after that task (Gen 2:20)? Didn’t you make public declaration of satisfaction after receiving your wife?
Adams behavior is no different from our behavior as married people today. We invite crowds and multitude to come and witness grand match to the presence of God and before the Preachers. We then allow God to be the main witness of exchange of vows. We make lots of promises e.g “for better or for worse etc”. In no time, the woman of your heart becomes your worst enemy. You blame God and everyone for the problems you are experiencing in your marriage.
Food for Thought
What were Eve and Adam doing next to the forbidden tree? Where they not having the whole garden of Eden to themselves? If they needed shelter or shade, were there no other trees to serve this purpose? O’ Adam, stop blaming God and face the consequences of your lack of self-control. We too can learn that spending time around wrong places and with wrong people can lead to compromising situations. Something very important to note – The devil was in a mission to destroy the marriage. But in order for him not be seen attacking marriage directly, he had to bring conflict in the marriage so that Adam can change the tone of his appreciation to the woman, Eve. The devil is out there to attack and destroy any institution and creation that God has done. After God created marriage, He said it is good and anything God before God will be dealt with severely by the devil.
Next time you fight with your partner, remember that you are just becoming an agent for the devil in his mission to destroy anything good that God has made including marriage.
Stay Blessed!
